Backyard shed
I needed more room in my garage for my workshop. So I built a small shed where I could put all my lawn tools, some car stuff (jack, ramps, jack stands, etc), and some other misc stuff.
I don’t have a truck these days. I was going to rent one, but I ultimately decided to have everything delivered. Smart choice, the PT plywood would’ve been a bitch to carry and move around.
This shed is a simple 4x8 structure. I made it less than 5’ tall. I might build in some shelves and other storage space, but right now it’s empty.
The base is all pressure treated. 2x4 framing and I think the ply floor is 3/4” or somewhere around that. I then sealed the edges of the plywood with some silicone.
I built the whole back wall at once and painted it. Mainly because there was no way I was going to squeeze between the fence and the shed to paint the back once it was done. After having to lift that back wall I’m not sure if I made the right decision.
Once the back wall was up I framed the other walls. It’s all 2x4 framing since it’s just a small shed. I just eye balled everything too, didn’t offset studs by 16” or anything like that. I attached OSB and then composite siding after framing up the walls. The lean to I made before I used hardee board, I didn’t want to cut that again. It was a pain in the ass. I added a couple more 2x4s to the front wall so the roof wood slope to the rear. I then quickly framed out the entrance with some 2x6 and 2x4.
I notched some 2x4s and used 1/2” or so plywood for the roof. I didn’t put a whole sheet on top at once, I cut two different sheets nearly in half. Way easier putting half the sheet up there. Then went on the drip edges. Roofing supplies come in massive quantities, so I now have a nearly full roll of felt leftover, but luckily one package of shingles was the perfect amount. I got the last one on there and threw on the flashing, siliconed the nail heads.
I then built out the doors. They are 2x4s, OSB, and siding. I painted the doors and the whole shed gray, trying to match the house. I decided to miter cut and frame the doors out with cedar. I didn’t want to make the whole thing gray. That’s why I also trimmed the corners with the cedar.
Since I eyeballed the whole thing, the doors were kinda a pain in the ass. I ended up trimming the doors down with a circular saw to get them to fit. Good enough for a shed. I put a floor bolt inside for the left door, then I added the one locking latch, but I decided I needed a locking bolt on the outside too. The latch felt like it would be easy to rip out.
So far I’m happy with it. I get a lot of crap out of my garage so I can finish building out my workshop, or at least make a dent in that before moving on to the next project.
